Hands up: who talks themself out of doing something because of the sacrifice in another area in their life?

Our internal narrative is a powerful little rocket.
I talk myself out of doing things – because my internal narrative is telling me doing something for myself means I’m: [enter negative narrative]
  • A bad mum

  • Not prioritising my family

  • Too selfish

Do you tell yourself that making time for you means you’re selfish?
Do you put the hairdressers off because you don’t want to be a burden on your husband by leaving the kids with him at the weekend?
Do you not ask for the pay rise because it might be seen to be greedy? You must be greedy to ask for money in the current market when your staff are stretched, you’re working everyone overtime, you’re working but not achieving on all the other stuff raised in your appraisal like BD, speaking slots, bringing in new clients…
Our unconscious mind is sabotaging. Our conscious mind knows what we want – we wrote it down in our intention setting sesh in Jan, but our unconscious mind is saying – ooh that’s a bit scary, not sure about pushing out of the comfort zone so let’s (distract/be too busy/have another priority) rather than moving into the fear zone and tackling the issue OR doing the thing we WANT!
So how do we overcome it? How do we change our internal narrative?
Our narrative comes from a place within, it can be influenced by so many things – friends that talk to you, social media, our upbringing, our partner, our colleagues – but they’re all external influences. In order to hear our own voice and narrative we must focus on what’s being said and exchanged.
Do you feel busy, harassed, unable to prioritise?
Do you know what you want to prioritise?

Have you taken the time lately to simply reflect?

Slow down and pause for a minute. Here’s a simple but powerful tool to think about your own narrative.

Look in the mirror. Stay there for at least 5 minutes, set a timer if necessary.

Ask yourself the following:

What do I want to start doing?
What did I say to myself when I stopped doing that?
What do I want to say to myself to get there?
Now look at positive influences you can introduce into your life to reaffirm the narrative that you want.
If needs be, take a break from socials. Spend time with someone who lifts you up. Practice a mantra that encourages you to do the thing that lifts you – mine is I am worthy.
Positive affirmation leads to positive energy and your energy creates your reality. Love yourself today and everyday by speaking to yourself kindly, gently and with encouragement.
P.s. I‘m in the hairdressers writing this.
